About the South Coast Environment Society

The Society was formed in April 1996 to be an umbrella group for the environmental groups already in Riverton, and since its inception more groups have formed.
Riverton is a small seaside town (population under 2000) 30 minutes from Invercargill and in the heart of Western Southland.
Its aims are:

  • Providing education about the Southern Coastal region's natural ecosystems.
  • Promoting sustainable lifestyles and eco friendly choices.
  • Displaying information on local environmental events and issues.
  • Providing a venue for a wide range of local environmental groups who promote, protect or educate.

The Society manages an Environment Centre that 10 local environmental groups use as a base. The Society manages several local projects.
