The Society was formed in April 1996 to be an umbrella group for the environmental groups already in Riverton, and since its inception more groups have formed.
Riverton is a small seaside town (population under 2000) 30 minutes from Invercargill and in the heart of Western Southland.
Its aims are:
- Providing education about the Southern Coastal region's natural ecosystems.
- Promoting sustainable lifestyles and eco friendly choices.
- Displaying information on local environmental events and issues.
- Providing a venue for a wide range of local environmental groups who promote, protect or educate.
The Society manages an Environment Centre that 10 local environmental groups use as a base.
The Society manages several local projects.
