APPLES: K = known to grow well in Southland.

APPLE BERYL LOWE

Mid season fruiting. Produces medium to large fruit with white skin and white flesh. Dual purpose apple for both cooking and eating.

Browns eater (Cider)
A vintage English cider apple which arose in south Devon in the early 1900's.
It is a very widely planted variety in Europe and is esteemed for its tangy, scented, fruity cider.
The medium, dark red fruit has a crisp, clean flavor. The flesh is often stained with red.
It has a tendency to be a biennial bearer. Ripens in April.

William Browlees Hempstead, Hertfordshire UK 1848 late…May self fertile. Medium size, slight Brown/red flush and brown russet. Juicy Crisp and sweet. Good crops but not regular. Tolerated cooler, wetter climates''

Calville Blanc d’Hiver K A very old French or German (pre 1600) of the highest dessert quality in the European style.
The medium large 'Lumpy' fruit are pale green with light red dots and light blush on the side
that is exposed to the sun. It is aromatic, sweet, spicy. The yellowish-white flesh is tender,
highly aromatic with a flavor sometimes described as "effervescent." Ripens in April.

Discovery Worcester Pearmain Cross – early January. Red with yellow flush. Sweet, juicy, good flavour. Flowers resist frost. Slow to come in to bearing then a good cropper.

Foxwhelp (cider) England 17th century in Gloucester, and was rapidly planted in Hereford, as well.
It is said to have been found near a fox den, hence the name. Of medium vigor, the tree blooms early.
The fruit is a bright-red that produces a musky cider of intense aroma.
Although marketed as a vintage cider, it also was used to give body and flavor to blends.

Glouster Raised in 1951 at the Fruit Research Station, Hamburg, Germany. Fruits have fine-textured, juicy,
sweet flesh with a briskly pleasant flavour. Keeps 3-4 months. Not heritage but worth trying here

Gooseberry Pippin K Kent 1831 Large Green apple, lively flavour. Yellowy/green with dark flush and stripes.
Excellent Cooker and keeps 6 months.

Granny Smith K Origin: Chance seedling NSW Australia, 1868.
Late season. April -May Medium size, green greasy skin, with white flesh.
Hard, crisp, sweet sub-acid. Refreshing dessert , sauce or cooking apple. Stores well.

Gravenstein Arrived Denmark 1669 possibly originally from Denmark. Vigorous tree. Early-mid season. (Triploid).
(Feb/March) Large aromatic apple. Greenish Yellow with orange stripes Dessert or processing and excellent for juice.
Fruits are crisp, juicy with a distinctive sweet yet acid flavour.

Red Gravenstein similar USA (1908)

Jonagold K Triploid 1943 New York. A cross between Golden Delicious and Janothan. Fruits havr creamy wite, fine textured, juicy flesh Dark red with stripes. Good Keeper. Mid season April
with a sweet and good rich flavour. Dark red flush with darker red stripes. Keeps 3-4 months. Not heritage but does well here.

Lady Suddley 1849 by a cottager Jacob Petworth Sussex originally called Jacobs Strawberry desert - Early –March Self fertile, medium striped red and pink. Juicy, firm, good cropper. Suited to cooler areas.

Liberty K New York 1978 Macoun X Purdue April/May Very disease resistant tree. Bright red flush, juicy crisp, sharp-sweet
flavour. Keeps well, vigorous tree, good cropper. Not a heritage apple but a modern trouble free one to consider.

Merton Russet K England 1921 Sturmer crossed with Cox Orange. Ready April keeps 4-5 months.
Yellow flushed with dull red and russeted. Firm flesh, crisp tender and sweet.

Munroe’s Favourite K Said to have been raised by Mr Condor at Kew, Melbourne, Australia. First recorded in the UK in 1890.
It was introduced by Mr Munroe. Fruits have crisp, hard flesh with a sweet, subacid flavour.
Ready April keeps 3-4 months.

Northern Spy K 1880 from New York Seedling - resistant to woolly aphid.
Fruits have firm, juicy , sweet flesh with a pleasant flavour.
Ready mid April keeps 4-5 months.

Ribbston Pippin Triploid Yorshire 1688. Needs shelter or it will drop its fruit early. Yellow green with orange blush. Mid season highly esteemed for eating, sauce and cooking. First tree lived for 220years near Ribbston Hall. Keeps well and flavour increases as it ages.

Rome Beauty K From seedling growing on the banks of the Ohio river USA 1817. Rome Beauty is considered one of the best cooking
and processing varieties available. Good reliable cropper and bears fruit young.
Fruit is large to very large, roundish to somewhat oblate in shape.
The thick, smooth skin is yellowish-green almost entirely covered with bright red and dark carmine stripes.
The yellow flesh is firm, crisp and juicy with a tangy pleasing flavor. Ripens in early April and keeps well.

Rosa du Perche K (Cider) Large French apple , yellow with a rosy blush. Juicy and tart.

Spartan 1926 Canada McIntosh X yellow Newton Pippin. Mid season keeps well red apple like delicious- crisp and juicy- leave on tree for best flavour- can keep but flavour declines. Good crops. Self fertile

Sturmer Pippin K Raised by nurseryman Dillistone at Sturmer, Suffolk, England 1831.
Fruits have firm fine textured juicy flesh, rich flavour. Ready April keep 5-6 months.

Tom Putt (cider) Medium large fruit. Distinctive shape with crown at apex. Pale geen/yellow with red flush and stripes.
Firm slightly bitter flavour. Eng 1700’s

Tremletts Bitter (Cider) A well known classic English cider apple which was first noted in the Exe Valley in Devon in the 19th century.
The fruit produces a sweet, astringent, high tannin juice which makes a full bittersweet cider.
Excellent used in blends with other sweet cider varieties. The apple is conical in shape and deep red in color.
Ripens in late April.

Yorkshire Greening K —Large, roundish, irregular, and flattened. Skin dark green, striped with dull red next the sun. Stalk short and thick. Eye closed. Flesh white, and pleasantly acid. One of the best kitchen apples. April - keeps 3-4 months

OTHER FRUIT:

Doyenne du Comice Classic Goumet Pear – ‘The best’ Green skin flushed with red and white, melting juicy flesh.
Tastes like sweetened cinnamon. Mid to late season.
Needs a pollinator. (Red Bartlett, Williams Bon Chretien or Winter Nellis)

Pear Taylors Gold Russeted Comice style pear with sensational flavour. Later ripening.
A sport of the Comice- does well in colder climates.
Needs a pollinator (Williams Bon Chretien or Winter Nellis, Buerre Bosc, winter cole)

Red Bartlett The Red Bartlett pear tree was produced from Bartlett parentage developed in Australia.
Similar to Bartlett but the skin has a dark red blush. Large fruit, highly flavored and juicy.
Fruit ripens in late August and should be picked before fully ripened.
Needs Pollinator. (Doyenne Comice, Beurre Bosc)
