Green gardener
It started off as a daily diary on our www.scse.org.nz website, recording the changes to our orchard garden, but soon relaxed back into an ‘occasional’ diary, written whenever I could find the time (or even remembered to write)
It’s not really a ‘how to do’ diary, more a series of snapshots of this and that, some plant focused and some on things we’ve built, found, noticed or that arose unexpectedly. I’d enjoy a co-writer as a foil for my writing - so if you are a keen gardener and have the time, get in touch – it is easy to do and then you will have a chance to share your garden secrets. (Let the Centre know and I will get back to you)
It is interesting to keep a record over time- through spring and summer and now, with autumn cooling down the dry summer soils. The web site gets a high number of hits and I am hoping some of them are taking a regular look at the green gardener.
South Coast Environment Societies ‘5 year Strategic Plan’ was finalized and adopted by the Society in September 2007. It can be viewed on our web site. This is a guideline for our focus and direction as seen at the time but is a flexible document allowing for focusing on new issues and projects as they arise also. Like our 2002-2007 plan it is another optimistic view of what could be possible…. in 2002 we would never have believed that most of our outlined aims for those next 5 years would come to fruition but they did! We are an enthusiastic and energetic team- come and join us to make a difference in Southland.
WE ALWAYS NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!
We have a great group of volunteers who staff the Centre helping out with the many daily tasks. However the Centre, the groups and the projects have all taken off in the last few months and have become extra busy - now we really need to double our work force. We could really do with two people on at a time- one person looking after visitors and being a food co-op volunteer and another person helping behind the scenes to support the other groups and projects. So if you have a couple of spare hours once a month or once a week any time at all come and see Robyn, Wendy or Yvonne and talk about the projects and tasks available- there is a lot to choose from. You could even take some things home to work on in your own time. Many hands make light work and will help us make a real difference in Southland.
DON’T BE APATHETIC THIS ELECTION YEAR
1. Find out about what each party stands for and how their policies will effect our environment and other things you care about.
2. Write to your local candidates or to the newspaper and say what you would like to see happen or what you don’t approve of.
3. Write to parliament and tell your issues clearly… it’s free!
4. Encourage your friends and family to do the same.
5. Do it now while the election promises are being formed.
All this will only cost you time but 100 little guys speaking up will definitely make a difference…they listen to the public this time of year!
IF YOU DON’T….WHO WILL?
AND WHAT WILL THEY BE DEMANDING?!
WE APOLOGISE: We are sorry our Summer Coastline is a few weeks late due to unforeseen circumstances. We hope the fact that it is slightly bigger makes up for it.
