Page ThreeCLAY OVENS Building a cob oven caused a flurry of interest around the country. Photos of the clay masterpiece in the Southland Times (with accompanying article) drew responses by mail and phone from people wanting to build one for themselves. Also, another piece in the New Zealand Gardener magazine let readers across the country into the secret. Even the dairy industry responded, interviewing one of the cobbers and taking photos for their magazine, aiming to show that there are up-sides to the practice of digging underpasses, throwing up mountains of clay, perfect for building clay ovens. Our website has step by step instructions and photos to show how to build a cob/pizza oven, so give it a go. (Get plenty of mates to help you) or come to our next workshop) By the way, pizza, bread, apple crumble and scones cooked ‘in the clay’ taste most excellent. An article in Southland Times about our last cob oven workshop resulted in a surprise parcel from America! Kiko Denzer in USA spotted it and sent Robert a copy of the inspiring cob oven book he wrote "Build your own Earth Oven" as well as another called "Dig your hands in the Dirt"- a manual for making art out of the earth. We hope to get copies of "Build your own Earth Oven" to sell through the Centre as it is such an excellent manual for cob ovens with some amazing designs. March 30th: Cob Oven workshop with Peter Aalders at the Aalders 9.30-4.30pm Cost $10- for further information and registration phone the Centre.
