NEW FEATURE: Poultry Keeping

An International Permaculture Design course was run for the first time in Southland in Riverton 12-27th April 2008. It was a very worthwhile and intensive course and well worth setting aside time and money for. It was great spending time with like minded people and the networks and friendships developed will be long lasting as we work together to make a difference.

\\
  • Encouraging South Coast 'Food Forests' and saving our heritage fruit trees and re-distributing them around Southland

(we have a 15 year old 'food forest' to learn from here in Riverton so we are not starting from scratch)

  • Encouraging low energy use (e.g. solar shower right)
  • Researching most suitable renewable energies in our area

  • Promoting local farmers Markets

(eating fresh seasonal whole foods while cutting down travel miles)

  • Education on 'reduce, reuse, recycle', composting and worm farming.
  • Encouraging bike riding, walking, car pooling and sailing!
  • Education on appropriate technologies

(A mixture of valuable old skills and new modern methods appropriate to our area)

Our educational 'Introduction to Permaculture" that had screened very regularly on SKY Channel 90, part of the Deep Down and Dirty Series made by SIT can be viewed in the Centre. This is a great little 20 minute introduction of what is possible in a Southland Permaculture project.

We are presently having working-bees in the Riverton Community Orchard to create a public "food forest" for education and community use.
We are also creating displays and fact sheets to have available in the Centre and on this web sites on-line resources.
